Getting Around: Changing it up at the Richmond Folk Festival
October 10, 2017
Ready to get your FOLK on?
The countdown to the big weekend has begun. When you arrive at the festival site on Richmond’s historic downtown riverfront, you’ll notice a few things that have moved. There are some exciting new developments, like the construction marking the expansion of the American Civil War Museum and the introduction of the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial bridge connecting Brown’s Island to the south side of the James River. Both developments are great for downtown, and the site will reflect a few shifts to accommodate these improvements. Take note of these changes and be sure to download this nifty map to help you get around.
Over the river and across the bridge
You can now access the Folk Fest on foot from the south side of the river! Make it an annual tradition to approach the festival on the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge!
The Community Foundation Stage has moved
Just a short walk from its former location, the The Community Foundation Stage has been moved from the area behind the National Park Service Visitor Center, up to the field just behind the large white headquarters of NewMarket Corp., on 2nd Street. If you somehow miss its magnetic pull just ask any volunteer to point you in the right direction.
No steps for you (from Tredegar Blue Stone, at least)
The staircase located on the Tredegar Area “blue stone” -- directly behind the iconic cannon will be closed, but the stairs and elevator near the National Park Service building will still be available for all your elevating and de-elevating needs. Please limit elevator use to those with strollers and mobility needs.
Beer, wine, and food also at 2nd Street Field
We were going to joke that we canceled all beer, wine, and food sales near The Community Foundation Stage, but we thought it might be too cruel. Never fear, we’ll always have the good stuff, and it’ll be up the hill on 2nd Street. (Just check that map!)
Family Area accessible from Brown’s Island Way
Nothing is worse than wandering around with kids in tow, trying to figure out where you’re going. Be the confident parent they always knew you could be and march them right over to the Family Area, now with TWO entrances -- one just off Brown’s Island Way, and the other in its normal location, behind the National Park Service Visitor Center. And new Moms, don’t miss the VCU Health Lactation Center, also behind the NPS Visitor Center, near the CarMax Family Area.
Now that you know how to get around, it’s time to start planning which stages to visit first. The schedules are up! Get ‘em here.
