Volunteer Sign-up has begun for Richmond Folk Festival

Secure the volunteer job of your choice now online

June 27, 2008 (Richmond, VA) – Now is the time to secure a volunteer position for the Inaugural Richmond Folk Festival, Oct. 10 -12. The Richmond Folk Festival’s online system for recruiting, tracking and coordinating volunteers is up and running for the 2008 festival on downtown Richmond’s riverfront and organizers anticipate nearly 1,000 volunteers – and they’ll need them all.

"The Folk Festival is run by volunteers,” said Francesca Parch, volunteer coordinator for the Richmond Folk Festival. “From site set-up to beverage sales to info booths to the folks who collect on site donations in the Bucket Brigade, this festival would not happen without volunteers.”

Potential volunteers are encouraged to go online to and sign up for one of the many unique opportunities. Shifts fill quickly, so volunteers are encouraged to visit www.richmondfolkfestival.com now. Many of the same jobs are still needed this year, like the popular artist buddy program, but there are also a few new opportunities that may be appealing to some.

For those folks who feel the call to volunteer for the festival, but don’t want to spend the weekend of the festival working, we have pre-event jobs that need volunteers,” said Stephen Lecky, Folk Festival manager. “For example, really cool volunteer jobs are site set-up and tear down.  This is a crucial area that is often overlooked. It takes weeks in advance to set up for this event, and by volunteering for this job you get to learn what it takes to produce this huge event, and then have the weekend off to enjoy the festival.”

Other available positions include assisting craft demonstrators, beverage sales, safety escorts, site management and many, many more. There is additional information about each position online at www.richmondfolkfestival.org/volunteer.html. The volunteer registration form outlines all positions and is a quick and easy way to reserve a volunteer spot. The system allows the volunteer to choose their preferred day, time and job assignment as they sign up.

The Richmond Folk Festival takes place October 10-12, 2008.  In the exact likeness of the National Folk Festival, the Richmond Folk Festival will feature more than 30 performing groups on seven live music stages with continuous music and dance performances, along with a Virginia Folklife demonstration area, children's and family activities, a folk arts marketplace, regional and ethnic foods and more. The FREE three-day festival is expected to be one of the largest events in Virginia, drawing visitors from across the country.

The first six performing groups have already been announced for the 2008 event; The Dan Tyminski Band, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Líadan, Ledward Ka’apana & Mike Kaawa, Howard Tate, and Dale Watson.  Please visit www.venturerichmond.com for complete bios, photos and music clips.
