Americana

Anya Hinkle is a distinguished American singer-songwriter whose music captivates with its blend of Appalachian roots and contemporary folk influences. Known for her soul-stirring voice and evocative songwriting, Anya has carved out a significant niche in the Americana and folk music scenes. With a career that spans more than a decade, her artistry reflects a deep appreciation for tradition while pushing the boundaries of the genre.

Anya’s journey began in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia, where she was deeply influenced by the rich musical heritage of her surroundings. She began to regularly attend local festivals and fiddling conventions, where she connected with many local musicians including Jackson Cunningham, with whom she recorded an album of duets for the Virginia Folklife Program’s Crooked Road Series. Anya went on to found and lead the critically acclaimed Americana groups Dehlia Low and Tellico. Her debut solo album, Wilderness, was met with critical acclaim for its honest portrayal of life’s highs and lows, and her subsequent releases have only solidified her reputation as a compelling storyteller and performer. With each album, Anya’s music has grown more intricate and profound, earning her a loyal following and respect from peers and critics alike. Anya won the Merlefest Chris Austin song contest and was a finalist in the Hazel Dickens songwriting competition in 2019 for her song “Ballad of Zona Abston,” and was runner-up in the International Acoustic Music Awards in 2022 for “Hills of Swannanoa.”

Her live performances are renowned for their intimacy and energy, where her voice and guitar blend seamlessly with heartfelt lyrics. Audiences are drawn to her ability to convey a wide range of emotions from joyful celebration to reflective contemplation. Anya’s songs not only pay homage to the folk traditions she cherishes but also explore new sonic landscapes, showcasing her versatility and innovation.

Anya was scheduled to perform at the 2024 Richmond Folk Festival, but a bridge washed out when Hurricane Helene swept through the mountains of North Carolina leaving her stranded (with a tree on top of her house!). We are glad to have a second chance to welcome her this year.
