Meet Julie Wang, 2025 Richmond Folk Festival Poster Artist

We’re excited to have artist Julie Wang create this year’s Richmond Folk Festival poster! Julie joins an esteemed group of artists that includes Wes Freed, Mickael Broth, Katie McBride, Chris Milk, Cassandra Kim, and Hamilton Glass and many more.

We thought we’d ask Julie some questions to learn more about her background and process!

Tell us a little bit about you and your background. Are you from Richmond?

Hi, I’m Julie! I’m a designer and illustrator, and I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2018. My four years in Richmond were such a special chapter of my life. I received incredible education and mentorship, met lifelong friends, and my husband is from here, so the city will always feel like home to me.

Have you attended the Festival before? Any good memories or thoughts about it?

Yes! I went a few times while I was at VCU. I remember Brown’s Island buzzing with music, laughter, and energy. The air was filled with the smell of amazing food, and rows of creative vendors lined the space. I always left inspired and well-fed. It feels surreal to be part of the festival as an artist this year.

What was your inspiration and thought process for the Folk Fest design?

I explored Richmond’s natural side for this project. I researched native animals and plants, then paired them with traditional folk instruments. It felt like taking a field trip without leaving my desk, blending nature, history, and music into one design. I chose a linocut style for its handcrafted quality, using bold colors and a dense, lively composition to capture the joyful, all-are-welcome spirit of the festival.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Richmond?

When I lived in the Fan District, I loved running from the VCU campus to the VMFA, taking the scenic route along Monument Avenue to admire the tree-lined streets and historic homes. Weekend brunch at Kuba Kuba is a must, with Cuban coffee and a sandwich as my go-to. In summer, I enjoy walking to Belle Isle, dipping my feet in the river, and relaxing on the rocks. For a quieter moment, I like strolling through Hollywood Cemetery. It sounds eerie, but it is peaceful and feels like stepping through a living history book.

The 2025 Official Richmond Folk Festival Poster will be available for sale during the festival at Plan 9 CDs and Merchandise tents. After the festival, they will be available at Plan9 Music in Carytown.
