There are two things you can count on every year at the Center for Cultural Vibrancy Stage: the Legendary Ingramettes will always bring the weekend to a rousing close on Sunday, and the stage will always showcase the latest musical collaboration from Virginia’s virtuosic musical mad scientist and multi-instrumentalist, Danny Knicely.

Born and raised in a musical family in the Shenandoah Valley, Danny has built upon his roots in old-time and bluegrass to explore musical traditions from around the world. Over the course of his career, he has shared his music and collaborated with musicians in more than a dozen countries across four continents, including U.S. State Department tours in Tunisia, Morocco, Russia, and Cabo Verde. His restless musical curiosity and remarkable versatility have made each new collaboration an adventure—and this one promises to be no exception.

For this project, Danny returns to the Shenandoah Valley to collaborate with the remarkable Melichenko Family, a virtuosic musical trio from Ukraine. The family features accordionist and professor of Ukrainian folk music Serhii Melichenko; his son, Vladyslav, on accordion and guitar; and his daughter, Anastasia, on violin. Each member has earned numerous national and international awards recognizing their exceptional musicianship.

Originally from Rivne, Ukraine, the Melichenko family fled Belarus in early 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and have since made their home in the Shenandoah Valley. Their music carries with it a rich cultural heritage while embracing the possibilities of collaboration and discovery in their new home.

Joining the Melichenkos and Danny will be Anastasia’s mentor, multi-genre singer and violinist Julia Kwolyk, a second-generation Ukrainian American and first-place winner at the prestigious Galax Fiddlers Convention, along with Danny's brother, bassist Neil Knicely.

Together, this extraordinary ensemble will bring together the driving energy and improvisational spirit of bluegrass, the vibrant traditions of Ukrainian folk music, and original compositions born from their shared musical exploration.
